Tour de France

Tour de France
Picture this: You are on your couch on a rainy Monday in the month of July an suddenly you fall on channel that broadcast a cycle race, but not only a simple bike race, it’s in deed the mystic ``Tour the France``. You can immediately change the channel if you want but have you ever tough of what is behind this race? When 198 riders are racing trough 3500 km to win a simple jersey? But this jersey is not an ordinary jersey ,it’s one of the most prestigious one in the world, it’s also yellow but that mean that you raced the 3500 km in less time than everybody else, that mean that you are the fastest and the strongest of the entire pack.
Let’s star by the beginning, how did it started? It came out of the brain of a journalist called Géo Lefèvre who pushed his idea so far that in 1903 he realized his goal and started the first ``Tour de France`` against everybody who tough that he was crazy. So that was the first one, 60 rider but only 21 finished the race that lasted nearly 2500 km in 6 stages. Now that we know a little bit more about the human factor, let’s talk about the material aspect. This race is not only an enormous challenge for the rider but also for the bike that need to be at every single moment simply perfect. Today’s bikes are made of carbon fibres, this material have been chosen because of many mechanical properties that are superior to the old one. For example, the carbon fibre is much more comfortable on a 6 hour ride than an aluminum frame. Why? Because it is fibres and not a piece of metal. This special fibre is also very light compare to steal and aluminum, and finally because we can mould this material and not weld it. This major difference is very important because it mean that you have not weak spot in your frame and it gives an extraordinary stiffness to your frame.
So next time that see this race on television think about everything that is behind it and watch it as a giant show where the actor are giving every part of themselves for this race and also a big window giving on what the market of bicycle is going to be because this race is also a big experimental field for the companies.
